Pittsburgh bridges reopen after 26 barges break loose and float unmanaged down Ohio River

Friday night, 26 barges flowed uncontrollably down the Ohio River, according to the Pittsburgh Public Safety Office.

After loose barges closed the West End Bridge in both directions and the Brunot Island rail bridge, traffic resumed on Saturday.

The 23 that broke away were carrying dry goods like coal, and three were empty. Campbell Transportation Company owns and operates barges.

Peggy's Marina was heavily damaged, but no casualties were recorded.

Eleven barges were stranded against the river bank by Brunot Island, 14 continued downriver, and six crossed the Emsworth Dam.

The barges' owner told ABC station WTAE that "the incident occurred under high water conditions on the rivers resulting in strong currents due to flooding in the area."
