A tragic mid-air collision between two small aircraft near Fort Morgan Municipal Airport on Sunday morning has left one person dead and three others injured, according to officials from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash occurred around 10:40 a.m. as both planes were attempting to land. A Cessna 172 was on final approach when it was struck by an Extra Flugzeugbau EA300, a high-performance aerobatic aircraft. Witnesses reported seeing both planes spiral into nearby fields and erupt into flames upon impact.

🚨 Emergency responders from multiple agencies—including Fort Morgan Fire Department, Colorado State Patrol, and Morgan County Ambulance—rushed to the scene. Two men aboard the Cessna sustained minor injuries and were treated at the site. One occupant of the EA300 was hospitalized, while the other was pronounced dead at the scene by the Morgan County Coroner’s Office.
Charred wreckage and debris were visible near the runway hours after the crash, including a detached wing and scorched tire marks. The identities of those involved have not yet been released pending notification of families.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched a joint investigation into the cause of the collision. Officials have not commented on whether air traffic control or pilot error played a role.
💬 “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim in this tragic event,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
This incident adds to a growing list of aviation safety concerns in 2025, prompting renewed scrutiny of small aircraft operations and rural airport protocols.
