California Highway Patrol Steps In to Protect Kamala Harris After Secret Service Detail Revoked

📍 Los Angeles, CA — September 1, 2025

Former Vice President Kamala Harris will now be protected by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) after President Donald Trump revoked her extended Secret Service detail last week, according to law enforcement sources and multiple reports.

The move comes after Trump signed a memorandum on Thursday authorizing the termination of Harris’s federal protection effective September 1. The decision reversed an earlier extension granted by President Joe Biden, which would have kept Harris under Secret Service protection until July 2026.

💬 “The safety of our public officials should never be subject to erratic, vindictive political impulses,” said Izzy Gordon, spokesperson for California Governor Gavin Newsom, who would need to approve CHP’s involvement.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also condemned the revocation, calling it “another act of revenge” and pledging to work with state officials to ensure Harris’s safety.

Harris, who resides in Los Angeles, is preparing to launch a 15-city international book tour for her memoir 107 Days, referencing the length of her presidential campaign. The tour includes stops in London and Toronto, raising concerns about her security during travel.

While CHP has declined to comment on the specifics of the protection plan, sources say the agency will provide dignitary security in coordination with local law enforcement. The Secret Service, CHP, and LAPD have all maintained silence on operational details, citing security protocols.

This marks a rare instance of a former vice president receiving state-level protection after federal coverage was withdrawn. Historically, vice presidents receive six months of Secret Service protection post-office, with extensions granted only in exceptional cases—such as Dick Cheney’s in 2009.

As Harris steps back into the public spotlight, California officials appear determined to ensure her safety, even as political tensions continue to escalate.
