Egypt Opens $1 Billion Grand Egyptian Museum Near Giza Pyramids

After more than two decades of planning and construction, Egypt has officially opened the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM)—a $1 billion cultural landmark hailed as the world’s largest museum dedicated to a single civilization. The full opening ceremony took place on November 1, 2025, near the iconic Pyramids of Giza, marking a new era for Egypt’s tourism and heritage preservation.

🏛️ A Monumental Project Comes to Life
The GEM spans nearly 500,000 square meters, with 24,000 square meters of permanent exhibition space—roughly the size of four football fields. It houses over 57,000 artifacts, including the complete collection of King Tutankhamun’s treasures, displayed together for the first time.

Key features of the museum include:
•     A children’s museum and interactive learning zones
•     The Middle East’s largest conservation center
•     A tourist walkway connecting the museum directly to the Giza Pyramids
•     Climate-smart design certified by the EDGE Advanced Green Building Certification, cutting energy use by 60% and water consumption by 34%

🎉 A Star-Studded Opening Ceremony
The opening gala featured a dazzling light and music show, with dancers in ornate pharaonic costumes performing to a live international orchestra. Fireworks and drone displays lit up the sky with images of ancient Egyptian gods.

Dignitaries from over 80 countries attended, including:
•     King Felipe VI of Spain
•     German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier
•     Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis
•     Crown princes from Oman and Bahrain
•     Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas
•     Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Culture Badr bin Abdullah

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi declared the museum a symbol of national pride, stating, “We are writing a new chapter of the history of the present and the future in the story of this ancient nation.”

🌍 Cultural Impact and Tourism Boost
The GEM replaces the aging Egyptian Museum in downtown Cairo, which had long struggled with overcrowding and outdated facilities. With Egypt’s tourism industry rebounding, the museum is expected to become a flagship attraction, drawing millions of visitors annually and reinforcing Egypt’s status as a global heritage destination.
To commemorate the opening, Egypt issued special postage stamps, gold and silver coins, and declared a public holiday.

🗿 A New Era for Ancient Wonders
The Grand Egyptian Museum isn’t just a building—it’s a bold statement about Egypt’s commitment to preserving and celebrating its 5,000-year legacy. With its cutting-edge design and immersive exhibits, the GEM invites the world to experience the grandeur of ancient Egypt in a thoroughly modern way.
