Labor Day Weekend Turns Violent in Chicago: 53 Shot, 6 Dead

📍 Chicago, IL — September 1, 2025

A wave of gun violence swept across Chicago over Labor Day weekend, leaving at least 53 people shot, including six fatalities, according to police reports and local news outlets.
The shootings occurred between Friday evening and early Monday morning, spanning neighborhoods from Bronzeville to Humboldt Park. Among the most harrowing incidents:

•     🔫 Bronzeville Drive-By: Seven people were wounded late Saturday night in a drive-by shooting on South State Street.
•     🔫 Humboldt Park Attack: Four people were struck by gunfire early Sunday morning in a separate drive-by incident.
•     🔫 South Shore Apartment Shooting: A 25-year-old woman was killed and another injured in a late-night shooting Friday.
•     🔫 East Garfield Park: A 29-year-old man was fatally shot Saturday morning when a suspect exited a dark SUV and opened fire.
•     🔫 Altgeld Gardens: A 43-year-old woman was gunned down Saturday evening by five armed suspects.
•     🔫 Englewood Argument Turns Deadly: A 33-year-old man was shot in the head during a dispute early Sunday.

🚨 No arrests have been made in connection with any of the incidents as of Monday morning, and investigations remain ongoing.

The violent weekend unfolded amid heightened political tensions. Former President Donald Trump renewed threats to deploy federal agents and National Guard troops to Chicago, citing the city’s persistent crime issues. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and Mayor Brandon Johnson have pushed back, calling the proposal unconstitutional and inflammatory.

Despite the grim toll, Chicago Police Department data shows overall crime is down 13% compared to last year, with shooting incidents dropping nearly 40%. Still, the holiday weekend’s bloodshed underscores the city’s ongoing struggle with gun violence.
