Helena Moreno Sworn In as New Orleans’ 63rd Mayor, Pledging Unity and Urgency

New Orleans officially welcomed Helena Moreno as its 63rd mayor today, marking a historic and hopeful moment for a city eager for change. In a ceremony held at the Saenger Theatre, Moreno took the oath of office administered by former Vice President Kamala Harris, becoming the first Latina and only the second woman to lead the Crescent City.

A Star-Studded Ceremony with Deep Local Roots
The inauguration drew a crowd of 2,500 attendees, including local leaders, national figures, and everyday New Orleanians. The event featured performances by Trombone Shorty and The Soul Rebels, appearances by chef Emeril Lagasse and Saints owner Gayle Benson, and a weekend of cultural celebrations including a mass at St. Louis Cathedral and a festival in Lafayette Square.

Harris praised Moreno as “talented but tough,” saying she would lead “with integrity, with courage, and with the people of New Orleans always at the center of her work”.

“All In for New Orleans”
Moreno’s inaugural theme — “All In for New Orleans” — underscored her message of collective action and shared responsibility. In her speech, she invoked the city’s spiritual resilience and called for a renewed commitment to public service, equity, and infrastructure.

“We will rebuild what is broken. We will fix what has been ignored. We will lift up every neighborhood, every family, and every dream because you have waited long enough,” Moreno declared.

She emphasized faith, hope, and love as guiding virtues, promising a city where seniors live with dignity, children thrive, and streets are safe and functional.

A New Chapter After Turbulence
Moreno takes office amid lingering challenges — including a budget deficit, recent layoffs, and the shadow of former Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s federal indictment. But her supporters say she brings a fresh sense of optimism and competence.

“She represents us all, not just a select group,” said one attendee at the Lafayette Square festival.

Moreno’s first 100 days will include signing 13 executive orders focused on infrastructure, public safety, and restoring basic services.

A Diverse Coalition and a Bold Promise
The ceremony showcased Moreno’s broad political coalition, with both Democratic and Republican leaders in attendance — including U.S. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry.

Moreno closed her speech with a pledge: “Together, we will build the city our children deserve, the city that you have earned, and together we can move in a new direction for our future”.
