Mayor LaToya Cantrell Withdraws Controversial Travel Request Amid Public Scrutiny

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has officially withdrawn her request for city-funded travel to a climate summit in Paris, following mounting criticism from residents, city council members, and watchdog groups.

✈️ The Request That Sparked Backlash
Cantrell had submitted a request earlier this month to attend the Global Urban Climate Leadership Summit in Paris, citing the city’s vulnerability to climate change and her role in advocating for sustainable urban planning. The trip was projected to cost over $12,000, including airfare, lodging, and security detail.

Critics argued the timing was inappropriate, with New Orleans still recovering from recent flooding and facing budget shortfalls in public safety and infrastructure. The request also reignited concerns over Cantrell’s past travel expenses, which have been the subject of multiple audits and ethics complaints.

🗣️ Public Pressure and Council Pushback
City Council President Helena Moreno called the request “tone-deaf” and urged the mayor to reconsider. Several council members proposed a resolution to block the funding, citing the need for fiscal responsibility and transparency.

Local advocacy groups, including the New Orleans Office of Inspector General and Citizens for Accountability, also weighed in, demanding a full review of the mayor’s travel history and expense reports.

📄 Cantrell’s Statement
In a brief statement released Monday afternoon, Cantrell said:
“While I remain committed to representing New Orleans on the global stage, I have decided to withdraw my request for travel to Paris in order to focus on pressing local matters. My administration will continue to prioritize climate resilience here at home.”

The mayor did not address whether she would attend the summit using personal funds.

🔍 What’s Next?
The City Council is expected to move forward with a broader review of executive travel policies. Meanwhile, Cantrell’s decision has sparked renewed debate over the role of international advocacy in local governance—and whether the benefits justify the costs.
With elections looming in 2026, the mayor’s travel habits may remain a flashpoint for voters and opponents alike.
