According to the New York City Police Department, Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr. was detained on Monday on suspicion of assaulting a 26-year-old woman in New York.
Porter allegedly "assaulted her, struck her multiple times, and choked her," according to a spokesperson for the NYPD who spoke to CNN. The lady is reportedly Porter's girlfriend.
According to the spokeswoman, Porter, 23, was detained on the spot and the woman was rushed to a hospital. According to the NYPD, he was detained on preliminary accusations of second-degree assault and strangulation.
Requests for comment from the Rockets and Porter's agent have gone unanswered.
We are aware of the reports about Kevin Porter Jr., NBA spokesperson Mike Bass told CNN. In order to obtain more information, the league office is in contact with the Houston Rockets.
The Milwaukee Bucks selected Porter in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft from the University of Southern California. He was moved twice before finally joining the Cleveland Cavaliers.
In his four seasons in the NBA, Porter has spent the last three with the Rockets and one with the Cavaliers. He scored 19.2 points per game on average last season.
The Rockets revealed in October that they had extended Porter's contract for a period of time, reportedly for more than $80 million.
