Trey Lance off to rough start as 49ers get blown out by Raiders in Preseason game
Trey Lance and his camp have made much of the work the San Francisco 49ers quarterback put in over the summer, but his preseason debut on Sunday received lukewarm reviews.

Lance completed 10-of-15 passes for 112 yards and a score in the first half of Sunday's preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders, but his performance was not quite as impressive as the figures suggest. The 49ers quarterback received little assistance from the team's second-string offensive line, as Lance recorded four sacks on the day. However, Jim Trotter of The Athletic was among several who thought that Lance did not assist himself by making bad decisions and holding on to the ball for too long.

Lance was also fortunate not to have any turnovers. The Raiders threw two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown by the 49ers.

The 49ers moved up three first-round picks to take Lance in the 2021 NFL Draft. He was awarded the starting role in 2022, but an early-season ankle fracture cost him the job, paving the way for Brock Purdy to emerge.

While Lance has been upbeat, there's a good chance he'll wind up third on the depth chart behind Purdy and Sam Darnold. To change that, he will most likely need to demonstrate more than he did on Sunday.
