Rapid City was founded in 1876 during the Black Hills Gold Rush. The city grew rapidly as a gateway to the Black Hills and became an important trading center. Rapid City played a significant role during World War II as the site of the Rapid City Army Air Base, which later became Ellsworth Air Force Base. In 1972, the city faced a devastating flood that led to the transformation and revitalization of the downtown area. Today, Rapid City serves as a hub for tourism, outdoor recreation, and a gateway to the Black Hills region.
